Month of January in Review

by Nick Johnson

I think I’ll start doing this as a fun way to document the growth of this site. Pat Flynn from smartpassiveincome.com does this with his earnings but since I don’t use this blog for direct income, my approach will be a little different. You can see what he does in his Monthly Report for January and how he lays it all for ya. My approach will simply be a numbers game for the site and its growth.

The month of January was without a doubt a fun month for me. I started doing some videos and those were fun and it seems like a lot of you like them a lot so I’ll keep doing them. I need to get out of the house here soon and do a video with David Krushinsky where I’m pretty sure we’re going to wear pajamas and kick it at Starbucks and talk shop, mostly because we can and we’ll  make fun of all the other monkey suit wearing cubicle farmers.

So, without further adoo-doo, check out my stats for the month of January.

Lets talk about what you see here.

  • 2876 Visitors for the entire month of January. I know many many other sites get that many visitors in a single day from a single source but considering this is a newer blog, I’m happy with that. Maybe I’ll pass the 3,000 mark next month.
  • 7732 page views. This to me is super super cool because it tells me these visitors are viewing more than just a single page. That is a great feeling to assume in my little pea brain that I might actually be providing valuable content to people who visit. Super cool!
  • 51.25% Bounce Rate. Now, I think and I’m probably completely wrong, bounce rate is the rate that is calculated when someone views a single page (usually the one they landed on when they got here) and immediately leaves. If this is true then only about half of the people that visit think I suck, not bad! I love it!!
  • 4 minutes and 23 seconds is how long it takes for you to decide I’m out of my mind and you leave. To me, if I figured out how to keep your attention for almost 5 minutes, that’s a HUGE success for me. I can’t even keep focused more than a minute or two without going off into lala land as you can see in some of my videos on My YouTube channel.
  • With almost half the visitors being new (49.06%) this tells me I must be doing something wright to draw ‘traffic’ to my site. Whatever it is, I guess I need to keep doing that. I really don’t know how I’m doing that to be honest but its still super cool!

Traffic Sources:

I think this part tells me a lot! I took the top 10 sources of traffic here, as you can see, I do pretty well with google which is super cool! I guess I should write and sell a cheese head e-book on how to get gobs of google traffic huh? Lets take a closer look.

  • Direct source meaning I think going directly to http://subject2.com. I’m not sure how or where those people are really coming from so it’s hard to tell. I guess I can only hope that number continues to rise. If you know how that particular part works, please, leave a comment and tell me.
  • Google baby!! Yeah! Do I make you Randy baby :) Hey, what can I say. Its just cool, that’s all there is to it.
  • FeedBurner/Twitter now this is something cool because this is I believe if you’re subscribed to my RSS Feed through FeedBurner you ReTweet on Twitter my posts that you get sent automatically or it may be when & if you subscribe to it and put it in your bookmarks. Either way, whatever it is, Thank You for that!! It really means a lot to me when any of my posts get ReTweeted.
  • StumbleUpon I want to say this traffic is primarily due to a post that I wrote called: Why I’m Not a Guru and Why They Suck which I believe got many of those views as I mentioned in this post: 3 Great Reasons to StumbleUpon. If you’re not familiar with StumbleUpon, it really is a cool site to use. My son and I are interested in photography and we’ll sit for an hour or so just stumbling the photographs that get submitted. I haven’t figured out how to get constant traffic from StumbleUpon as the success I’ve had with it has seemed only by luck. If I figure it out, I’m sure I’ll have more referrals from that site.
  • BiggerPockets what can I say, I’m on there, I’m active and I love that site!! If you’re not on BiggerPockets.com then you need to get with the program! It’s FREE and there are almost 50,000 members registered on that site. I’m proud to say I’m currently ranked #6 out of the top 10 most influential people out of 50,000 (tooting my own horn there). I really do enjoy the people and environment.  You’ll see even at in the navigation bar above, I’ve got a direct link to the site.
  • Problogger now this is where I really feel like I’m a somebody in the ‘blogosphere’ world. I’ll tell you upfront though, I think this is a direct response from being linked to from one of Darren’s posts. Outside of that, I wouldn’t have any traffic. Recently I wrote a post called: I’m a Blogging Rockstar Now! where I give you the story about how exactly this all happened. Unless another miracle on 34th street happens, I don’t see this happening again next month :(
  • Twitter what can I say, I think that’s obvious. Again, I truly thank each and every one of you who Tweet my posts and ReTweet them as well. It really makes me feel like I’m doing something right for a big ‘ol dummy investor like myself.
  • flipthiswholesaler now this is odd but still, totally cool in its own right. Stephani Davis, the hottie from Tampa has a site named flipthiswholesaler.net duh! and she barely posts (at least compared to my post frequency) but she’s letting me steal eyeballs which I certainly won’t complain about. I enjoy reading her posts and I believe at least 99% of this traffic is a direct hit from commenting on her posts. If you haven’t heard, giving quality comments does more than you think. I think I’ll keep checking out Steph’s site, we’ll see how many more eyeballs we can steal in February.
  • Goodfaithinvesting I don’t know who that all pans out other than she must have less viewers than Steph because Shae of goodfaithinvesting.com posts much more frequent and I comment on her posts much more simply because she posts more. I think also Shae has linked back to me on a few occasions. Either way, it’s cool that I’m getting some love from Shae’s site. She’s been a true friend and is actually the direct result of the really cool logo you see at the top here.
  • Since I don’t know what the hell that is, we’ll skip #10.

Top Content

These are the top viewed pages I guess. What I think is cool is that I only have 254 pages and they were viewed a total of 7732 times. That is completely awesome to me! I’m really interested in average time on pages, bounce rate and % exit because to me, that is an indicator on what I’m doing right and wrong. You’ll notice the far right says I’ve made ZERO dollars and I think thats for google adsense but as you know, I really don’t care about that one bit. Here is a link list of the pages that were in the top 10 for January:

So there you have it! I’m really excited that a guest post made it in the top 10 for the month. I will tell you that the other guest posts did extremely well and I’m glad to have them here. They truly add great value. You’ll notice that I did leave out the Home Page and the Blog page. Rounding out the top 12 which could technically be the top 10 was:

So that’s it! Its been so much fun in January I plan on extending that to February and see how well the site does. If you guys see some areas in where I can improve, by all means, please let me know. If you have an answer to a few of the questions up there, please comment below and let myself and other readers know.

  • Well Nick, You can thank Shae for the reason I'm here. I saw here Retweet on Twitter and just had to see what this was all about. I really appreciated the value you gave in this post and your stats really speak for itself given the amount of commitment you put behind all that you're doing. These are some great traffic sources you have going on and you should definitely keep it going. I guess I'll be bookmarking another awesome blog, as well as Retweeting this ASAp. Thanks again!
  • Thanks for the comments and stopping by. The RT's are appreciated

Since you asked if there were any areas that you could improve, I think I'll reply. I think you should get dressed up for us in your videos. The main reason I think this, is pure envy, as I can not show up to the office and not be dressed up.

    Other than that.....GREAT JOB!
  • thanks James for your comment. I apologize but I will not be getting 'dressed up' for any videos. Unless that means wearing fancy pajamas, then I'll consider it.
  • Hey Nick! Thanks for the shoutout! These blog stats are terrific I must say! You're doing a lot of things right clearly and having frequent high quality content is the way to go.

By the way, that #10 on your list...I am pretty sure those are clicks from people on your newsletter distribution who use Yahoo mail. I'm not 100% sure, but I frequently see that as well as mail.live.com in my referrers list.

And yes, you are absolutely correct. My homegirl Steph's blog gets way more traffic than mine does :-)
  • thanks for the heads up on #10, you're probably right as usual.
  • strugglinginvestor
Man! passed like I was standing still. Took you 2 months to build as much traffic as what I've been slowly building for 9 months now. Although I will say ever since I've been implementing the tips from Pat Flynn I've notice a huge jump in my viewership. Over the past week I've broken ever high I've had. Pat knows what he is doing.

On the technical terms, you understand Bounce Rate correct and pretty much everything else. Very nice work Nick. And where does my blog rank in terms of driving traffic to your site? Want to do a guest post sometime?
  • Pat Flynn is great! I also bought Darren's e-book from Problogger a while back (31 days to better blogging) and have been implementing as much of that as I can. i truly credit a majority of the success in growth I've had to that e-book.
  • Not bad for a new blog, Nick! Keep up the quality content and you'll continue to see this thing grow. Good luck.
  • maybe I'll get to the big times like you Josh :)
