How To UnSuck Facebook

by Nick Johnson

This post is more of a recap of what I just read on another site named: Snipe.Net where the author posted what I consider an amazing post titled: Unclutter Your Facebook Feed: Set FB Lite as Your Default

Let me point out that I am by no means claiming to be a Social Media Guru or even an expert. I am considered in my own twisted mind an expert at creating and building relationships. I have made an extraordinary amount of money ‘From’ Facebook not ‘With or On’ Facebook.

What I mean is I’ve taken a relationship directly from FB and have done a few deals because of it. These were either relationships started on FB or elsewhere that were continued on FB. I don’t focus my time and energy pushing products or services on Facebook but I do push relationships. I know that engaging people and genuinely being interested in who they are and or what they do will increase my chances of doing business with them for the benefit of the both of us.

If you’re following me on FB, you might have seen my updates lately where I am literally deleting ‘Fake Friends’ that only ever spend their time on Farmville or Mafia Wars and all I ever get from them are updates regarding those. The other is a constant invitation to a webinar or even that I might or might not be interested in but when I don’t know you well enough to decide and this is all I have to base who and what you are, chances are, you’re @ss is getting deleted.

I digress……..

Somehow someway I ended up on this site Snipe.Net and read the post and thought it was a life saver! I quickly followed the tutorial. A recap is below if you’re too lazy to click on the highlighted link that will take you to the original post on the other site:

  1. Go to http://lite.facebook.com/settings/defaultsite/.
  2. Select Facebook Lite from the radio boxes.
  3. Click “Save”.
  4. Take a Nap, well ok, that part I changed.

Seriously though! I did it and what I specifically did was check the box that allows me to switch at will just incase I change my mind and feel like stabbing my eyes out with a fork. You can see up at the top right of the screen an option to switch it back:

Not bad huh?

So take this with a grain of salt, you might enjoy that some guy you don’t even know is wasting his day away on Mafia Wars and keeps sending you a request to become part of his backstreet boy band gang but for me, I’m not down with that. I’m more concerned with creating relationships and doing great things because of FB and other Social Networking Platforms.

What things have you done to improve your experience with FaceBook and increase your productivity with relationships and engagement of others?

Very timely post, Nick!

Did you know you can block all of those applications when people post them on your wall? I started doing that towards the end of last year because I was getting like eleventy hundred of those STUPID FREAKING Blingee postcards on my wall every day.

So anyway, I've been blocking all applications as they are posted to my wall, and also deleting people like crazy if they post affiliate links or whatever to my wall. Also people who keep sending me stupid annoying invitations to their stupid annoying webinars are also getting the boot! It's kind of fun, actually.

It still amazes me how so many people just don't get that social media is about BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS, not spamming the living crap out of everyone….

End of rant.

Beautiful ran Steph! I truly believe in Building Relationships with Social Media/Networking Platforms which is why it's hard for me to actually delete my FB account (I did once and then reactivated it and cleaned it up big time). thanks for the tip. I sincerely appreciate it.

I was the same way with Twitter- deleted it once because I just didn't get it, then tried it again and still didn't get it. so I deleted it a second time and haven't gone back.

Sometimes I feel like I'm missing out, but I figure if I have to force myself to like something, it's not worth it, ya know?

I heart Facebook, though, esp now that I got rid of all of the annoying aps. :)

P.S.
Here's a link to a video that shows how to block stuff….

For me, Twitter wins between the two. I get so much great information quickly and I've discovered or been introduced through seeing someone's RT in my stream some really amazing people. Some of which, I would have never known or spoken too in every day life. Most recently, this morning. Another commenter mentioned her interview with Craig from Craigslist, I checked out her link and saw his(Craig's) twitter link. I tweeted him and now we have connected and briefly conversed between eachother. I'll be interviewing him here shortly because of it. Not something I'm sure could have been so quickly and effectively using FB.

I still heart FB too, but Twitter steals the show for me personally

I hear what you're saying, and know lots of people who feel the same.

I just couldn't get into it for some reason. I tried, though. Twice. ;)

My facebook was only for keeping in contact with my friends around the country. Now not only do i keep in touch with friends of the past but I use it to get to know other investors such as your self, Shae, Stephani and others. Great thread Nick.

I suck at using facebook and like I did with twitter at first I friended everyone who asked. On twitter this quickly made it impossible to really build relationships with anyone. I have since created another twitter account and changed my strategy to one like you talked about here. I plan to do the same with facebook soon. It's getting out of control.

Thanks for the tip Nick

Great post, Nick! Ever since I learned how to use privacy lists and settings on Facebook, it has made my experience 10x better!
